How do children get these infections?
Both viruses spread through direct skin-to-skin contact or by touching contaminated surfaces, towels, toys, or clothing. Children are more susceptible because their immune systems are still developing, and they often have small skin breaks that allow entry.
Are they contagious?
Yes. Both warts and molluscum can spread between children or to other parts of the same child’s body. Covering lesions, avoiding scratching, and using separate towels help limit transmission.
Do they go away on their own?
Yes, but it can take months to years. Warts often resolve within 1–2 years; molluscum may last 6–18 months. Some children develop new bumps as others heal. Treatment can help speed resolution and prevent spread.
When should I seek treatment?
See a dermatologist if lesions are painful, spreading rapidly, inflamed, located near the eyes or genitals, or causing emotional distress. Children with eczema may experience worsening or extensive molluscum that needs medical care.
Can warts or molluscum come back?
Yes. Even after removal, recurrence can occur until the immune system fully clears the virus. Good hygiene and avoiding scratching reduce the risk of reinfection.
How can I prevent spread or recurrence?
Keep bumps covered, discourage picking, avoid sharing towels or razors, and maintain clean, moisturized skin. For molluscum, avoid swimming in public pools until lesions are healed or covered.
Are these conditions a sign of poor hygiene or serious illness?
No. They are extremely common in healthy children. Persistent or unusually widespread lesions might warrant an immune evaluation, but this is rare.
